HERNDON, Va. – JANUARY 19, 2021 Sylva Police Department, North Carolina, and Livingston Police Department, Illinois have been selected as recipients of SpeedAlert 18 and Shield 15 radar feedback signs respectively through All Traffic Solutions’ ATS Gives Back initiative.
Over the last 20 years, All Traffic Solutions found that police departments in smaller communities have a need for All Traffic Solutions signs, but lack the necessary funds and do not qualify for grants. The ATS Gives Back goal is to bridge this gap. Each month the All Traffic Solutions team selects two police departments to receive radar feedback signs free of charge.
Sylva, North Carolina has a population of 2,724 but experiences a daily traffic volume comparable to a larger city. North Carolina Highway 107 runs directly through the town limits and averages 35,000 vehicles daily. There are two separate entrances to a local high school located along the highway, and these school zones require patrolling during school hours. With a force of 15 sworn officers and usually two patrol officers on duty at a time, it is a challenge for Sylva Police Department to enforce speed limits along this corridor. Sylva Police Department responds to nearly 500 collisions a year within town limits, and they say speeding is the primary cause of most of them.
“The speed sign is so versatile and the quality is second to none. The possibilities seem endless for its use in our town. We have received so many positive comments from the community. The speed sign is a visual reminder to citizens of our PD’s commitment to their safety.” said Sylva Police Chief Chris Hatton.
The second December recipient, Livingston Police Department, is a small rural agency that usually has one officer patrolling at a time. Livingston’s two main roads, Livingston Avenue and Nicholls Street, have speed limits of 25 mph and 30 mph, respectively. Vehicles frequently travel these roads at over 15 mph over the speed limit.
“A [Shield 15] radar sign would help keep the public aware of their speed in comparison to the speed limits of our town.” said Lieutenant Matt Sinnokrak. “I believe this [will] help decrease the chance of traffic accidents as well as keep our children safer while they play outside. A portable radar sign [will] also allow the department to target specific neighborhood problem areas as they occur.”
