All Traffic Solutions, a leader in smart parking and transportation technology, published a new case study detailing how the Natick Police Department deploys portable ATS SpeedAlert cloud-based radar message displays and ATS 5 Trailers to assist at the Boston Marathon, which passes through five miles of the historic Massachusetts town.
The pre-programmable signs relay traffic-related messages to the public before and after the race to notify motorist of impending road closures and direct them to the best routes back to main roadways. During the race, the signs are stationed to direct runners to medical tents and emergency shelters should they be required. By utilizing SpeedAlert signs for roadside messaging, displaying driver speeds and speed-dependent messages, and capturing traffic data for real-time reporting, the Natick Police Department can execute a highly effective traffic safety program.
The case study also recounts how the department utilizes ATS StatTrak off-road counter classifiers to capture accurate traffic data for quick speed studies. According to Officer Scott Lacerna, the devices are easy to install. “We were using road tubes, but using StatTrak we avoid the mess of nailing tubes to the ground and then tearing them back up,” Officer Lacerna said. “It’s far easier to tie a StatTrak to a pole. We use four-foot zip ties to secure it to the pole, then we chain it with bike chain so that they don’t get stolen. I can put two StatTrak devices up in 30 minutes at two separate locations.”
